Special effects Eisenhower White House bust
An original prop used in the production of Superman II, the 1980 superhero sequel starring Christopher Reeve in the title role.
This bust can be seen on screen as Zod (Terence Stamp), Ursa (Sarah Douglas) and Non (Jack O'Halloran) storm The White House and is caught in the crossfire as the fight takes place.
Constructed from solid plaster the heavyweight bust features the likeness of President Dwight D. Eisenhower atop a circular base, this was rigged for bullet hit effects by special effects wizard Derek Meddings who inserted small explosive squibs under the surface which could be remotely detonated off camera to simulate the shots, the remains of these can still be seen today and to the rear of the piece the wiring which controlled them is still present.
The bust stands an impressive 24" high and measures approximately 16" across the shoulders, it remains in excellent screen used and screen matched condition with the obvious damage from production use.
A highly displayable artefact from this well regarded picture which remains an influential favourite of the superhero genre.
