Description

An original prop used in the production of the long running BBC television series Doctor Who.

From the 1982 serial The Visitation starring Peter Davison as The Doctor this is the original soliton gas machine as used by the Terileptil creatures. The futuristic device was custom built for the production by the BBC Visual Effects Department and is constructed from from various materials with the main body of the prop being green fibreglass which is dressed with foam and metal details, this sits atop a base of vacuum formed plastic which is painted to simulate metal. The base section also contains panels of translucent plastic which could be lit in sequence by the bulbs contained to the interior of the machine. The whole prop sits on a base which is constructed of box iron and wood with an integral shelf which contains all of the various wiring and electronics required to operate the machines lights, after over thirty years this appears to the untrained eye as little more than a mass of wiring and for this reason remains untested although there is no obvious reason it would not be in working order.

The prop stands approximately 48" high including the base with the actual machine itself around 27", the measurements of the base are approximately 21" square. The prop remains in generally excellent screen used condition with some paint loss to the unprimed vacuum formed plastic and some general wear from age and storage.

This represents a unique and incredibly displayable artefact from this long running science fiction series.
