Description

An original costume used in the production of The Sting, the 1973 caper classic starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford under the direction of George Roy Hill.

This shirt can be seen worn by Ray Walston as J.J. Singleton as he and the other grifters are sat discussing Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw) and their plans to work the wire on him. The period wardrobe for the film was visioned by Academy Award winning costume designer Edith Head and bespoke made for the production by leading industry tailors Western Costume with this shirt constructed from a material featuring alternating purple and white lattice patterned stripes. To the interior collar the shirt retains its original Western Costume label which is type written '2137-1, RAY WALSTON' in addition to various sizing information, further costume house stamp and inventory tag present to the tail with interior collar additionally hand inscribed with numbers likely relating to its use in a subsequent production.

The shirt remains in good production used vintage condition exhibiting some wear and fraying to the collar and left shoulder with two buttons replaced by the costume house, otherwise fine.

An extraordinarily rare example of original wardrobe from this highly regarded box office smash which was the recipient of seven Academy Awards.
