Description

An original costume used in the production of If I Were King, the 1938 historical drama starring Ronald Colman and Basil Rathbone under the direction of Frank Lloyd.

This tunic was worn on screen by Ronald Colman as François Villon in the climactic scenes of the movie and was bespoke made for the production by noted industry tailors Western Costume. The medieval style tunic of grey velvet features hook and eye fastenings with a triple fleurs-de-lis crest to the centre of the chest, ruffled sleeves and decorative gold embroidered appliqué to the collar area. The costume is silk lined to the interior and features a Western Costume Co stamp in red ink with evidence of where the label was once stitched which is now absent.

The costume remains in good production used vintage condition with signs of wear to include heavy rubbing to the shoulder area with minor staining and water marks to the interior lining, also exhibiting some edge fraying and other general wear you would expect from a costume which is now eighty years old.

An exceptionally rare example of principal character costume from this Academy Award nominated production.
