Description

An original artwork created during the production of the 1980 science fiction picture The Empire Strikes Back, the second instalment of the classic Star Wars franchise directed by Irvin Kershner.

This artwork was created during the production by art director Alan Tomkins who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his contribution to the picture. Accomplished in ink on paper the artwork is a light hearted depiction of the Hoth filming location in Finse, Norway and features a figure dressed in the famous crew jackets created for the shoot carrying a 'continuity bag' and towing a desk containing a typewriter and script mounted on skis, a sign post points to the North Pole and Finse. To the bottom the artwork is hand inscribed in Tomkins' hand in blue pen "AND ANN SKINNER SAID IT WOULD BE AN EASY LOCATION!! BEST WISHES, ALAN" referencing the difficulties the crew had to overcome filming at such a remote location, this annotation being made before he gifted the piece to continuity supervisor Pamela Mann during the production.

The artwork measures approximately 11.5" x 8.25" and remains in good vintage condition with some toning and edge wear to include a tear to the right, light creasing and minor paper loss to the bottom corner but this does not detract from what is a unique artwork which is believed to be uncirculated and unpublished. Originating from the collection of continuity supervisor Pamela Mann.

A unique and interesting talking point from one of the most influential and highly regarded franchises in cinematic history.
