Day of the Triffids (The)

Triffid root

Sold

Description

An original Triffid root used in the production of the 1981 BBC Television adaptation of The Day of the Triffids.

For the series eight full scale Triffid props were constructed from a design by visual effects designer Steve Drewett, each plant was built by the BBC Visual Effects Department around a go-kart seat on which an operator would sit to manoeuvre the Triffid, concealing the seat was a large root section. This original root section was removed during the restoration of the only known surviving full scale Triffid plant which remains in The Prop Gallery collection.

The root is constructed from mixed materials including foam, latex and chamois leather, lined to the interior with furniture foam and dressed with various materials such as horse hair to achieve its natural and organic look. The root measures approximately 3' x 2' and remains today in good condition with some damage and missing parts, notably the clackers, from production use and storage, it is believed to be the last surviving section of its kind.

An incredibly rare opportunity to obtain an original screen used artefact from this highly regarded adaptation of John Wyndham's classic novel.
