Sarang Rover filming miniature

Description

An original filming miniature used during the production of Moon, the acclaimed 2009 science fiction drama directed by Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell.

This is one of the original Sarang Rover filming miniatures used during the production of the movie. Director Duncan Jones worked closely with a skilled model effects team headed up by veteran model maker Bill Pearson at Shepperton Studios to create the miniature effects. The Rover filming miniatures were designed by conceptual designer Gavin Rothery and built by the model effects crew in two scales with a total of four miniatures created for filming, three being in one-twelfth scale and a radio controlled version in one-sixth scale.

This is one of the original screen used Rover miniatures built in one-twelfth scale largely by model shop supervisor Steve Howarth, constructed mostly from PVC sheeting with cast resin wheels the miniature features various detailing including an opening top hatch with numerous LUNAR INDUSTRIES decals and the designation 01 in addition to a Doctor Who action figure to the interior which has been painted to more resemble Sam Bell. The miniature is painted to a high standard with all aspects of the prop having been heavily dirtied down to add the appearance you would expect from a heavily used moon based vehicle. To the interior body some of the wiring for the headlights is still present with a small switch being concealed to the rear of the miniature which would have operated them during the production.

The Sarang Rover measures approximately 16" in length, 10.5" wide and stands an impressive 8.5" high, it remains in generally excellent condition with remnants of dust from the lunar surface remaining to the wheels. The final images show the miniature on set and under construction at Shepperton Studios during the production.

With very few filming miniatures produced for the movie this represents a highly significant artefact, an incredible display spectacle and a testament to the quality of the model effects work on this already cult science fiction masterpiece.
