DeLorean barcode licence plate

Description

An original prop created for the production of Back to the Future Part III, the final instalment in the classic trilogy starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

This is an original DeLorean barcode licence plate created by the production for the scene at the end of the final instalment of the trilogy where Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) narrowly escapes the time machine before it is destroyed by an oncoming train as he arrives back in 1985. After the DeLorean is struck by the train its licence plate is seen spinning before coming to rest on the ground in an shot created by noted special effects house Industrial Light & Magic, this being a homage to the similar shot seen in Back to the Future (1985).

This is one of the original plates created for filming this sequence which has been heavily distressed to appear as crash wreckage, constructed from steel the plate features a barcode created from pieces of applied foil with the date 2015 to the top and the L from 'CALIFORNIA' being the only remaining state letter, to the bottom are three remaining digits from the identification number. Being a heavily distressed prop the licence plate has been bent with its orange paint finish partially remaining and some heat damage to resemble a piece of crash wreckage which has just been hit by a train. To the rear of the plate are two small pieces of box iron have been attached with a welder, these would enable the crew to rig the plate on a line or bar for the special effects shot of it spinning, ultimately a cleaner version of licence plate was used in the final cut of the movie.

The plate measures approximately 11" x 6" and remains in good production distressed condition, overall fine.

An instantly recognisable and displayable artefact from this classic science fiction trilogy.
