Three Musketeers (The) - 1948

D'Artagnan (Gene Kelly) doublet

Sold

Description

An original doublet used in the production of the classic 1948 film adaptation of The Three Musketeers based on the novel of the same name penned by Alexandre Dumas.

This doublet was worn by Hollywood legend Gene Kelly as d'Artagnan and was designed by prolific costume designer Walter Plunkett who went on to win an Academy Award for An American in Paris which also starred Kelly in the lead role. The brown lace up doublet is bespoke make for Kelly to a beautifully high standard, lined to the inside and labelled with period Metro Goldwyn Mayer label which reads Gene Kelly 1420 4826 in pen, the writing being heavily faded but still legible.

The costume exhibits some moth holes but remains in generally excellent condition considering its 65 year age.

This incredibly rare vintage MGM costume represents a signature piece from this 1948 classic which starred some of the biggest names of its day and still remains a benchmark of sword fighting choreography.
