An original costume used in the production of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 1977 science fiction classic directed by Steven Spielberg.
Although now considered one of the biggest triumphs of Steven Spielberg's distinguished directorial career the production of Close Encounters was not straightforward with the design of the extraterrestrial creatures going through a number of concepts before the design and method of portrayal was finally decided upon. Ultimately the aliens would be portrayed by a combination of young children in bodysuits which were filmed largely in silhouette by Academy Award winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and with a mechanical puppet built by special effects wizard Carlo Rambaldi.
The extraterrestrial costumes were created for production by The Burman Studios and comprised of an oversized head with a simple bodysuit. This is an original bodysuit used during the production of the movie and worn by one of the children portraying the extraterrestrial life forms, constructed from shimmering gold spandex the hand made full length bodysuit features a concealed zip to the rear with thumb holes to the cuffs and a small label to the interior printed 'M' for medium.
The costume measures approximately 35" long and remains in excellent production used and vintage condition with some minor fraying to the seams, generally very fine.
A rare example of original wardrobe from this critically acclaimed Academy Award winning blockbuster which will forever remain a classic of the science fiction genre.
