An original storyboard binder used in the production of the 1980 science fiction picture The Empire Strikes Back, the second instalment of the classic Star Wars franchise directed by Irvin Kershner.

This is the original storyboard binder issued to Brian Johnson, part of the team which went on to win a Special Achievement Academy Award for the visual effects on this picture, and utilised at Industrial Light & Magic during the production. The binder contains a large collection of first generation storyboard copies and a quantity of paperwork relating to the production. There are approximately 280 storyboards printed on various coloured pages, these featuring various details relating to the shot including the effects elements required and animation notes with shot descriptions underneath the illustrations, many of these are revised boards which contain various dates throughout 1979. The spine of the binder features an inserted period label which is type written 'COPY #14, BRIAN JOHNSON STORYBOARDS'. The following is a detailed breakdown of the binders contents.

  • ILM EFX continuity list comprising 29 pages with covering letter on Chapter II Company stationary dated November 19th 1979.
  • List of omissions, additions and changes to storyboards dated May 3rd 1979 bearing hand inscribed ticks in red pen.
  • Scene notes comprising 11 pages, first page hand inscribed 'BEEJAY' in blue pen.
  • Kerner Co shooting schedule dated May 2nd 1979 comprising 3 pages detailing 29 shooting days over 6 weeks.
  • Kerner stage weekly shooting schedule revised 5/9/79 comprising 3 pages.
  • 86 yellow storyboard pages detailing the opening sequence including credits, Probot, Tauntaun and Speeders, preceded by black cover page with applied production logo sticker.
  • 12 pink storyboard pages detailing space sequence.
  • Approximately 190 grey storyboard pages detailing the iconic Battle of Hoth sequence.

The binder measures approximately 11.5" x 11.5" and the contents remain in excellent production used condition with some exhibiting only very minor edge wear, exceptionally fine throughout. Obtained directly from the personal collection of Academy Award winner Brian Johnson.

An incredibly rare and concise collection of original production material from one of the most influential and highly regarded franchises in cinematic history.
