Dune

Bob Shepherd personal storyboard notes

Sold

Description

Original storyboard notes used in the production of David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of Dune, based on the novel by Frank Herbert.

These storyboard notes were created during pre production at Apogee Inc who were originally contracted to provide the visual effects for the picture, this was the personal paperwork of noted visual effects artist Bob Shepherd who had previously collaborated with Apogee founder John Dykstra on Star Wars and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Ultimately Apogee did not provide the effects for the picture and pulled out of the project altogether.

The storyboard notes are presented in a manilla folder with contents as follows, each is titled 'PROJECT 8'.

  • Storyboard categorisation page dated 13 December 1982 which breaks down the various storyboard numbers into different categories.
  • Two pages of notes which are hand written in pencil, these relate to various shot elements including the use of bluescreen, mattes, slit scan, smoke effects and filming of miniatures.
  • Two pages of meeting notes dated December 14-17 1982 relating to various visual effects elements, hand inscribed 'BOB' to the top corner in pen, these being stapled to a further 6 pages of storyboard notes with every page bearing notes by Shepherd which are hand inscribed in pencil.
  • A 17 page set of stapled storyboard notes, inscribed 'SHEPHERD' in pencil to the top corner with several pages bearing notes by Shepherd which are hand inscribed in pencil.
  • A further set of storyboard notes, running 27 pages, these revised and bearing the date 10 December 1982, again hand inscribed 'SHEPHERD' to the top corner in pencil with a red circular sticker, the notes carrying some minor annotations in Shepherd's hand.

This collection of paperwork offers a great insight in to the production process with which Apogee were so heavily involved before finally pulling out very close to the start of principal photography, it remains in generally very fine condition throughout with only minor wear from production use.

A rare and interesting offering from the early days of this box office flop which later achieved cult status with science fiction fans.
