Batman (Michael Keaton) cowl
An original costume used in the production of Batman, Tim Burton's 1989 superhero blockbuster starring Michael Keaton as the caped crusader opposite Jack Nicholson in his unforgettable portrayal of The Joker.
The now iconic Batsuit worn by Michael Keaton was visioned by costume designer Bob Ringwood who drew inspiration from the comic books by Neal Adams in an effort to avoid the camp costumes of yesteryear. The creation of the suits was a complex process with both the cowl and bodysuit being sculpted over a life cast of Michael Keaton by Vin Burnham from Ringwood's design before being cast in foam rubber creating a costume which would define the character for decades to come. Approximately twenty complete suits were created by the production as their delicate nature combined with vigorous filming requirements meant they had a limited lifespan, when suits were deemed to be no longer in suitable condition for close up filming it was common for them to be relegated to more distant shots and stunt work.
This cowl was created by the costume department and used during the production of the movie, constructed from foam rubber the iconic cowl features cut outs for the eyes and mouth with the trademark pointed ears, to the underside of the shoulders and the tips of the cowl is residue where it was glued to the cape during the production. Attempts to maintain some manoeuvrability when designing the costume were largely unsuccessful with Keaton's hearing and vision impaired and with little movement available in the heavy and restrictive suit the conditions during filming were far from ideal with the star often becoming frustrated. It is for that reason that when this particular cowl was selected for use in the scene where Batman crashes through the glass ceiling of the museum a small section of the chin area was removed to allow the stunt performer more head movement and the essential ability to look downwards whilst filming the stunt.
The cowl measures approximately 20" high to the tips of the ear and a similar measurement across the shoulders, it remains remarkably soft and supple to the touch throughout with some wear consistent with production use and age, most notably to the shoulder area. Overall fine.
This represents an instantly recognisable and iconic artefact from this Academy Award winning popular culture phenomenon and influential classic of the superhero genre.
