Batman

Gotham Cathedral gargoyle statue

Sold

Description

An original prop used in the production of Batman, Tim Burton's 1989 superhero blockbuster starring Michael Keaton as the caped crusader opposite Jack Nicholson in his unforgettable portrayal of The Joker.

This statue formed part of the Gotham Cathedral set built at Pinewood Studios and visioned by production designer Anton Furst who worked closely with director Tim Burton in designing Gotham City, contributing heavily to the dark look of the picture and winning the 1989 Academy Award for Best Art Direction with set decorator Peter Young.

This gargoyle statue was used on screen atop Gotham Cathedral which was the site of the climatic confrontation between Batman (Michael Keaton) and The Joker (Jack Nicholson). Firstly the gargoyle was hand sculpted in clay from which a plaster cast was taken, this was then further detailed and textured before a mould was created to cast the screen used statue in hollow fibreglass with wooden supports to the interior of the base making a lighter weight and more manoeuvrable prop. The seam lines where the different sections were joined being filled with cement and the statue painted in a weathered stone like finish.

The gargoyle stands and impressive 42" high with the base measuring approximately 30" x 19", it remains in good screen used condition with the tail detached but present, much of the original paint finish has worn off the prop given that it spent 25 years proudly displayed in the garden of a crew member after its use during the production, some areas of the statue still retain traces of the original finish where it has been less exposed to the elements.

An imposing and highly displayable artefact from this Academy Award winning superhero classic which makes an excellent conversation piece.

Please note that due to its large size and weight this lot requires specialist crating and handling, we therefore recommend that any shipping queries, particularly those of an international nature, are discussed before purchasing.
