Description

An original design folder used during the production of David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of Dune, based on the novel by Frank Herbert.

This folder was created during pre production at Apogee Inc who were originally contracted to provide the visual effects for the picture, headed up by effects pioneer John Dykstra who had previously won an Academy Award for his work on Star Wars before forming Apogee, his own visual effects company in the late 1970's. Ultimately Apogee did not provide the effects and pulled out of the project altogether.

This folder contains all of the design work for the system designed by Apogee to control the Atreides Thopter miniature. The control unit was designed and built from the ground up and this folder contains a number of hand drawn wiring diagrams and notes which span over twenty pages in addition to four large scale blueprints and eleven unique Polaroid images of the Thopter control unit built by Apogee. This wealth of information is contained within a manilla folder which is hand inscriber 'DUNE MODELS'.

The paperwork is foolscap size at 8.5" x 14" with the four blueprints each measuring 36" x 24" and the Polaroid images 3.5" x 4.25". The folder and its contents remain in excellent production used condition throughout, very fine.

A rare and interesting look at the complex behind the scenes work undertaken on this now cult science fiction production.
