Alpha Centauri (Stuart Fell) head - The Curse of Peladon
An original prop used in the production of the long running BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who.
Alpha Centauri is the hermaphroditic hexapod alien delegate who first appeared in the 1972 serial The Curse of Peladon starring Jon Pertwee as The Doctor. The memorable six armed sqeaky voiced creature was portrayed by veteran stunt performer Stuart Fell and voiced by Ysanne Churchman, Alpha Centauri returned to our screens in the 1974 serial The Monster of Peladon and also made a cameo in the 2017 episode Empress of Mars penned by Mark Gatiss.
Only one Alpha Centauri costume was built for the series with this head being the one used on screen in both Peladon serials of the 1970s, constructed from fibreglass the oversized head features a single large eye to the front and is dressed with applied string to simulate veins. To the interior the head features a thick fibreglass rod which holds a vintage cork lined equestrian helmet with two steel bars which extend through to the felt eyelids allowing the performer to operate them thus bringing the character to life. The painted plastic eye piece is a later recreation based on and accurate to the one used in The Monster of Peladon, the eyes differing between the two serials likely due to damage or loss in the two years between filming.
The head measures approximately 16" at its widest point and stands an impressive 18" high, it remains in excellent screen used condition with some minor wear to the eyelids and has received several paint touch ups over the years including the red featured on the veins (some partially missing) and eyelid.
A stereotypical example of the bug-eyed monster which has become synonymous with the science fiction genre this represents an instantly recognisable and unique creature head from the period which remains in stable and near perfect condition, the rarity of which cannot be overstated.
A highly displayable and extremely significant artefact from this classic science fiction series.
